Overview
The certificate addresses what creators need in order to understand, build and demonstrate ability as visual storytellers, covering conceiving, illustrating, formatting, publishing and promoting finished work across both analogue and digital formats. Hands-on, experience-based training culminates in a full-colour, multi-page comic that is presented and displayed publicly at a Comic Arts Festival. Afterward, paths include freelance work for mainstream publishers, self-publishing, or roles in film, television and gaming, as well as further study toward other visual-art credentials such as animation or film.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires C+ in English 12, or C in English 12 Camosun Alternative, as the stated language requirement; no separate IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or CAEL score is published. Beyond the grade, applicants must submit, together and electronically, a personal statement of about 500 words describing themselves, the kinds of stories they want to tell, the authors and illustrators who have influenced them, and what draws them to the programme, plus a portfolio of five to ten pieces of work, such as stories, scripts, sketchbook drawings, graphic art, blog or web pages, or photographs, that supports the interest described in the statement. Both go by email to the programme contact. The college states that review of submissions is non-competitive: applicants are not ranked against one another, only assessed for fit.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC for Camosun's open-enrolment programmes: for Fall 2027 (September) applications open 1 October 2026 with an early deadline of 15 May 2027 for priority registration and a late deadline of 26 August 2027; Winter 2027 (January) runs 15 September 2026 to 7 January 2027, and Summer 2027 (May) 15 January 2027 to 29 April 2027. Limited-enrolment programmes publish only an opening date and can close once the waitlist exceeds the seats on offer. International applicants must submit a complete application by 1 June (Fall), 1 October (Winter) or 1 February (Summer), though later applications are still reviewed while seats remain, making admission effectively rolling for both groups once the early deadlines pass. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
