Program details

Overview

This certificate is a full-time, 39-week foundation program covering the shared first-year knowledge and skills for four heavy mechanical trades: Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic, Diesel Engine Mechanic, and Transport Trailer Technician. Delivered at Camosun's Interurban campus, the program includes about 36 weeks of technical training addressing inspection and repair of heavy trucks, buses, diesel engines, transport trailers and heavy equipment, along with engine, hydraulic, pneumatic and drivetrain systems, plus a three-week work experience placement with an employer. Graduates receive credit equivalent to Level 1 technical training in their chosen trade and may apply some of the work experience toward apprenticeship hours, at the sponsor's discretion. The program prepares students to enter an apprenticeship in one of the four heavy mechanical trades toward Red Seal certification, and suits people starting out in heavy equipment or truck and transport mechanics who have good physical health and manual dexterity.
