Overview
The Enhanced Bridge Watch Rating Program is a 17-week, full-time certificate at Camosun College preparing entry-level personnel for careers at sea, delivered in partnership with BCIT and supported by Transport Canada and the Oceans Protection Plan. Eligibility is limited to Indigenous people and women who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and the program is fully funded, covering tuition, books, course materials, meals and local transit. Training is based on three modular courses covering seamanship, navigation, safe working procedures and marine environmental hazards, combined with field trips, hands-on practice and a practicum at sea. Graduates earn nationally recognized Transport Canada certifications, including Bridge Watch Rating Training, WHMIS 2015, Restricted Operator's Certificate - Maritime Commercial, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency, Marine Basic First Aid and STCW Basic Safety Training and Proficiency in Survival Craft. Graduates find entry-level roles with employers such as BC Ferries, the Canadian Coast Guard, tug operators, cruise ships and deep-sea vessels, as well as in marine-based ecotourism and fishing.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Open to women and Indigenous people who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents; applicants need a high school grade of 50% or higher in English 12, First Peoples' English 12 or English Studies 12 (or academic assessment), a grade of 50% or higher in any Math 11 (or academic assessment), government-issued photo ID, a Transport Canada Candidate Document Number, and a Seafarers' Medical Certificate from a Transport Canada-approved physician.
