Overview

Deafblind and Intervenor Studies is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate at Conestoga College's Brantford campus, offered by the School of Community Services and delivered full-time over two academic terms, with intakes in September, January and May. The program prepares students to work as professional intervenors supporting individuals with combined visual and hearing impairments. Instruction combines theory, simulation, interactive learning and community-based practice to teach effective intervention strategies for educational, community and home settings. Students complete community-supported field placements that provide experience in real work environments, developing techniques for communication, guiding and the use of assistive devices. The program suits students with an interest in accessibility, sensory disability support or community services work who want to develop direct-care intervention skills.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: An Ontario College Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Degree, or equivalent, in a related field (i.e. Education, Child Studies, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, Social Services or Rehabilitation, Educational Assistant, Child Youth Worker) or an acceptable combination of a minimum 5 years of related work and personal experience.
