The Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship program delivers the in-school portion of training for apprentices working toward certification as an Automotive Service Technician (310S) in Ontario, with graduates able to pursue Red Seal endorsement. In-class instruction combines hands-on shop training with technical coursework covering Occupational Health and Safety, engine systems, and electrical systems, including battery diagnosis, starting and charging systems, and engine management and computer-controlled components. Training continues into body electrical and supplemental restraint systems, gasoline and diesel fuel delivery systems, manual and automatic transmission and transaxle diagnosis and repair, and drive shafts, differentials, and drive axle assemblies. Apprentices alternate this classroom and shop instruction with employer-based on-the-job training under a registered sponsor. The program is delivered part-time and in person at the Thunder Bay campus. Admission requires an employer sponsor and registration of a Training Agreement with Skilled Trades Ontario before enrolling in the in-school training component.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age (16 in limited cases), have legal permission to work in Canada with a valid Social Insurance Number, and meet the trade's educational requirement, generally Grade 12 or equivalent, though some sponsors accept Grade 10 or equivalent. Applicants need an employer sponsor located in Ontario, which may be a private employer, association, or union, and apply for the apprenticeship through Skilled Trades Ontario once an offer of employment has been received. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development then drafts a Registered Training Agreement, signed by the apprentice and sponsor, before in-school training begins. This program is not currently available to international students, who would additionally need a valid Social Insurance Number and an employer sponsor to enter an apprenticeship.
