The Industrial Mechanic Millwright Apprenticeship program delivers the in-school technical training for apprentices working toward certification as an Industrial Mechanic Millwright (433A) in Ontario. Workshop instruction covers machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders, along with precision tools including micrometers and vibration-analysis testing equipment. Coursework in mechanical theory addresses force, torque, energy, and the properties and strength of materials, while machine technology covers material handling systems, prime movers, fans and blowers, and preventive and predictive maintenance. Apprentices also study pneumatic and hydraulic fluid power systems, electrical and electronic controls including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and welding and fabrication skills such as reading welding drawings and material cutting and assembly to specification. Apprentices alternate this in-school training with employer-based on-the-job training and need an employer sponsor and a registered Training Agreement with Skilled Trades Ontario. The program is delivered part-time and in person at the Thunder Bay campus.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age (16 in limited cases), have legal permission to work in Canada with a valid Social Insurance Number, and meet the trade's educational requirement, generally Grade 12 or equivalent, though some sponsors accept Grade 10 or equivalent. Applicants need an employer sponsor located in Ontario, which may be a private employer, association, or union, and apply for the apprenticeship through Skilled Trades Ontario once an offer of employment has been received. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development then drafts a Registered Training Agreement, signed by the apprentice and sponsor, before in-school training begins. This program is not currently available to international students, who would additionally need a valid Social Insurance Number and an employer sponsor to enter an apprenticeship.
