Apprenticeship Heavy Equipment Technician is a Red Seal trades program delivered through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) at Portage College's Lac La Biche Campus, open to students registered as AIT apprentices. The program covers the skills and knowledge needed to maintain heavy equipment used in construction, mining, forestry, and agriculture, integrating classroom instruction with practical training in engine systems, hydraulics, electrical components, braking systems, and fuel injection. Training is organized into four periods, each delivered in person and combining lab and theory instruction with mandatory work-experience hours logged with AIT between periods. Graduates who complete all four periods and the required work-experience hours earn Journeyperson certification as licensed Heavy Equipment Technicians and are prepared to work in the construction, mining, and agriculture industries. Each technical training period carries a combined tuition and fee cost of $1,213.49, covering tuition, student association fees, a recreation fee, and materials/shop fees. Periods begin in October, January, and March across the intake year.
