Program details

Overview

Classics at Dalhousie University is a Bachelor of Arts program examining the languages and cultures of ancient civilizations, with particular attention to Greek and Roman societies. Students study classical texts, philosophy, religion, and history spanning the ancient through medieval Mediterranean periods, with an emphasis on reading source material in the original ancient languages alongside translation-based study. Coursework progresses over four years, beginning with introductory courses on ancient Greece and Rome, mythology, and introductory Latin, moving through literature, history, philosophy, art, and architecture in the middle years, and culminating in advanced seminars on classical texts and specialized topics. The degree is offered at Dalhousie's Halifax campus with options for Honours, Combined Honours, Major, Double Major, or Minor. It suits students interested in ancient languages and critical, text-based analysis, providing a foundation for further academic study as well as for careers in fields such as law, theology, and international development.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from a completed Grade 12 requires a minimum overall average of 70 percent, including Academic English 12 and four further academic Grade 12 subjects. Admission to Dalhousie programmes is competitive, so meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place. The programme's own page names no portfolio, interview or other non-academic condition, directing applicants instead to the separate admission pages for Canadian, international and transfer applicants for category-specific equivalencies, and to the Academic Calendar for full degree requirements. International applicants are assessed on the same subject list through Dalhousie's equivalency tables and must also meet the university's English-language requirement unless exempt, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 20. The programme admits students in both September and January.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Dalhousie's live Dates and Deadlines page still shows the September 2026 entry cycle as of mid-September 2026, not the 2027 cycle. For that cycle, Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) and Bachelor of Social Work close February 15, 2026; the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (Architecture) closes March 1, 2026; and the Health Sciences post-diploma option closes June 15, 2026. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline. Dalhousie has not yet published September 2027 entry dates. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
