Program details

Overview

The Respiratory Therapy program is a four-year Bachelor of Health Sciences degree delivered through Dalhousie's School of Health Sciences, with an option to exit after three years with a diploma. It trains students to manage cardiopulmonary conditions, including administering oxygen therapy, managing artificial airways, and operating mechanical ventilation, combining theoretical coursework with clinical practice. Coursework covers anatomy, cardiopulmonary physiology, mechanical ventilation, respiratory disease, health care ethics, and research methods. Clinical training includes six-to-eight-week summer practicums in years one through three, plus dedicated clinical education courses in year three, with placements across Atlantic Canada and potentially further afield. Graduates become eligible to write the Health Professionals Testing Canada exam toward becoming a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Admission is competitive, with the program describing an annual intake of 24 students and priority given to Atlantic Canadian residents. The program suits students who want hands-on clinical training in acute cardiopulmonary care, are comfortable working with vulnerable patients and invasive procedures, and can think critically and work steadily under pressure in fast-paced clinical settings.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 75.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Dalhousie's Respiratory Therapy program admits from two routes. High-school applicants need Grade 12 academic English, Math, Chemistry and either Biology or Physics, with no mark below 70% in any of these courses and an overall average of at least 75%. Applicants with prior post-secondary study need a minimum GPA of 2.75 on Dalhousie's 4.30 health-sciences scale, with no grade below C in prerequisite courses. All applicants must submit the required non-academic documents as part of the selection process. The program accepts 24 students a year; one seat is reserved for Prince Edward Island residents, and Nova Scotia residents receive priority for the rest, followed by other Maritime provinces and then the rest of Canada. International applicants are not eligible. Admission is competitive and meeting the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee a place.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Dalhousie's live Dates and Deadlines page still shows the September 2026 entry cycle as of mid-September 2026, not the 2027 cycle. For that cycle, Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) and Bachelor of Social Work close February 15, 2026; the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (Architecture) closes March 1, 2026; and the Health Sciences post-diploma option closes June 15, 2026. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline. Dalhousie has not yet published September 2027 entry dates. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
