Social Anthropology (PhD) is offered by Dalhousie University's Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology as a research-intensive doctoral program. Students carry out independent and original research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, working toward a thesis in one of three designated research areas: critical health studies; economy, work, and development; and social justice and inequality. The program combines advanced coursework, comprehensive requirements, and a supervised research program leading to a doctoral thesis defence. Full-time study is expected to take five years or longer to complete, with admission each September. Instruction is delivered in person at the Halifax campus. Applicants work with a graduate coordinator and supervisory committee to develop a research proposal aligned with departmental strengths in sociocultural and medical anthropology. Graduates typically pursue careers in academic research, teaching, policy analysis, and applied social research roles that draw on ethnographic methods and social theory.
