The Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology is a research degree offered by the Department of Anthropology, culminating in a dissertation. A program of study is designed for each student to build competence in a chosen field of research across the department's five fields: Archaeology, Evolutionary Anthropology, Linguistic and Semiotic Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, and Sociocultural Anthropology. The standard entry route from a relevant master's degree runs four years full-time and is delivered in person; direct entry from a bachelor's degree is also available. Students work with a faculty advisor toward a dissertation examining an original research question within their chosen field, and those working with living organisms or modern human remains must have an approved ethics protocol before beginning that research. No standardized admission tests, such as the GRE, are required or recommended for entry to the program.
