Overview
This graduate diploma (DESS) in Usability and User Experience (UX) is offered jointly by Polytechnique Montreal's Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering and its Department of Computer and Software Engineering. It is intended for students and working professionals who want advanced training in the ergonomic and computing aspects of user-experience (UX) design and human-computer interaction design, developing mastery of the theories, methods, standards, and tools used to analyze, design, implement, and evaluate user interfaces for technical and human performance, safety, usability, accessibility, and user experience. The program comprises 30 credits: 21 mandatory credits and 9 elective credits, organized into an Ergonomics / Human Factors Engineering module (21 credits) and a Software Engineering module (9 credits). Depending on background, students may need to complete a prerequisite course in basic programming (INF1005, Procedural Programming). The program leads to the Diplome d'etudes superieures specialisees en ergonomie du logiciel (DESS).
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to Polytechnique Montréal's graduate diplomas (DESS) and 2nd-cycle microprograms requires holding a bachelor's degree in engineering or in a discipline relevant to the program, or a university degree of a scientific nature with training judged relevant by Polytechnique Montréal. Applicants must also hold a cumulative average of at least 2.5/4.0 (or 2.7/4.3), or an equivalent recognized by Polytechnique; a candidate below this threshold may request a waiver by presenting a file demonstrating aptitude for graduate study, such as relevant professional experience or further study completed since the degree. Every admitted student must have a designated study director. Meeting these general conditions does not guarantee admission: candidates must also satisfy the specific conditions of the program applied to, and the program's responsible authority may add further requirements. Applicants whose prior education was not completed in a French-medium system recognized by Polytechnique must also provide an accepted French-proficiency test result, assessed before the rest of the file; failing this requirement leads to rejection of the application.
