Certificate in Language Guardianship

The Certificate in Language Guardianship is a 30-credit-hour community-based program at First Nations University of Canada focused on the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages. It covers conversational fluency, language structure, writing systems, literature, translation principles, and oral traditions, drawing on Cree, Anihšināpēmowin, Dakota, Nakota, and Dene language traditions. The program combines language study with linguistics to prepare students to support language documentation, teaching, and community-based revitalization efforts. It is available at the Regina Campus and the Northern Campus. Admission is based on a minimum 70% average in English Language Arts A30, English Language Arts B30, and approved 30-level Math, Science, Language, or Social Science courses. Graduates can pursue careers as language instructors, language consultants, education resource developers, or in language revitalization and translation work, or apply the credential toward further certificates or a degree in Indigenous languages and linguistics.
