Program details

Overview

The certificate prepares students for firefighter certification by building the specialized knowledge and applied skills required to meet the NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. Hazardous materials coursework completed at the institute leads to certification under the NFPA 472 standard for responding to hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction incidents.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Firefighting Technologies Certificate (FFTC) requires applicants to be at least 18 years old by the program start date and to hold Grade 12 English with a minimum grade of C (60%), confirmed by official transcript. Candidates must also complete Basic First Aid (minimum 8 hours) with CPR Level C before entry. JIBC does not require a standardized English-proficiency test score for this program; the Grade 12 English requirement serves as its stated language standard. Admission further requires medical clearance in two parts: a completed PAR-Q+ (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) and a doctor's note confirming fitness to undertake firefighter training, plus a documented physical-ability assessment (such as the West Coast Kinesiology Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal or an equivalent university fitness assessment) covering strength, speed, power, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and aerobic capacity. Community or volunteer experience, mechanical aptitude and above-average fitness are noted as beneficial but not mandatory. Applications go through EducationPlannerBC; recent cohorts (R60, R61) opened with online starts in October and November 2026 and on-campus starts in January and March 2027, each with its own application deadline.

Application Details

Application Deadline: JIBC runs two admission models: Continuous Intake programs (most certificates and micro-credentials) accept and review applications year-round with no fixed deadline, while Scheduled Intake programs (its bachelor's degrees, diplomas, and EMS/paramedic and law-enforcement programs) publish a specific opening and closing date for each cohort. For example the Winter 2027 cohort (starting 4 January 2027) generally opens in August 2026 and closes between early November and early December 2026, and the Spring/Summer 2027 cohort (starting 3 May 2027) opens in December 2026 and closes between early March and early April 2027. Fall 2027 dates for most Scheduled Intake programs were not yet published at the time of research. JIBC does not publish a separate international deadline; international applicants use the same program-specific dates and must also budget time for study-permit processing. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
