Overview
The Health Sciences (EMS) Diploma is designed for individuals new to the health care field as well as working paramedics and paramedics looking to advance to the Advanced Care Paramedic level. Most students complete the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) program component of the diploma first. In the PCP program, emergency medicine skills are mastered through independent study, hands-on practice, and ambulance and hospital placements. After PCP program completion, many students become licensed at the PCP level and work as paramedics while finishing the remaining online courses in the diploma. Topics addressed range from anatomy and disease pathophysiology to research methods and conflict resolution.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Health Sciences Diploma (EMS pathway) requires current EMR certification, with PCP, ACP and CCP practitioners exempted if they can provide proof of completion of the higher-level certification. Academic prerequisites are high school graduation (or mature-student status under JIBC's Admissions Policy), Grade 11 mathematics with a minimum grade of C (60%) — met by Foundations 11/12, Pre-Calculus 11/12, or Calculus 12 — Grade 12 English or Grade 12 First Peoples English with a minimum grade of C (60%), and Life Sciences 11 or Biology 11 (or equivalent) with a minimum grade of C+ (67%). JIBC does not publish a standardized English/French language-test score on this program page for domestic applicants; international applicants are directed to contact JIBC's Office of International Affairs, which administers the institution's own English-proficiency requirements separately. No portfolio, interview, essay, or criminal record check is stated as a domestic admission requirement. There are three intakes each year: Winter (January, application deadline November 10, 2026), Spring/Summer (May, deadline March 9, 2027), and Fall (September, deadline July 13, 2027).
