The Geospatial Technologies Micro-credential at the Justice Institute of British Columbia is a three-course, three-credit online program that builds mapping and spatial data analysis skills for emergency management professionals. Using ArcGIS Online, with a one-year student licence included, participants learn to gather, validate, manage, and analyze geospatial information and to produce maps, dashboards, and situational briefings that support emergency planning, response, and recovery. The recommended completion time is three months, with up to twelve months allowed, and multiple start dates run through the year. Admission requires a minimum age of 18 and foundational computer skills; graduates earn a micro-certificate and digital badge.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This is a self-paced, open-enrollment micro-credential in JIBC's Emergency Management area of study. The programme page sets no academic prerequisites and states it is designed for learners with little or no prior GIS experience; no prior technical GIS background is required. The only stated eligibility rule is that applicants must be at least 18 years old. Instead of a credential requirement, the page asks learners to have basic computer competency: downloading, saving, renaming, locating and uploading files; creating and organizing folders; taking and saving screenshots; and copying and pasting URLs accurately. Before enrolling, the page recommends, but does not require, a free pre-assessment covering Incident Command System and Emergency Operations Centre concepts. No English or French language-proficiency test score, portfolio, interview, work-experience, or criminal-record-check requirement is stated for this micro-credential.
Application Details
Application Deadline:JIBC runs two admission models: Continuous Intake programs (most certificates and micro-credentials) accept and review applications year-round with no fixed deadline, while Scheduled Intake programs (its bachelor's degrees, diplomas, and EMS/paramedic and law-enforcement programs) publish a specific opening and closing date for each cohort. For example the Winter 2027 cohort (starting 4 January 2027) generally opens in August 2026 and closes between early November and early December 2026, and the Spring/Summer 2027 cohort (starting 3 May 2027) opens in December 2026 and closes between early March and early April 2027. Fall 2027 dates for most Scheduled Intake programs were not yet published at the time of research. JIBC does not publish a separate international deadline; international applicants use the same program-specific dates and must also budget time for study-permit processing. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
