Program details

Overview

The Certificate of Arts degree is designed to provide an educational experience that prepares students for work, citizenship, and an enriched life able to engage critically with their communities. By giving students a solid grounding in the Arts the certificate program enhances student abilities while laying a solid foundation for further study. The Certificate in Arts is awarded to students who have completed six credits of university level English, and 24 credits from undergraduate courses at the 1100 level or higher.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: KPU's calendar entry for the Certificate in Arts states only that the Faculty of Arts's admission requirement applies, and that requirement consists solely of KPU's undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement; no separate academic prerequisite is listed for this certificate. Applicants are admitted under one of KPU's five categories — High School, Transfer, Mature, Indigenous or Access — set out on the university's own admissions page, with identical academic and English standards for domestic and international applicants. That requirement is met by BC English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12 or Literary Studies 12 at a minimum grade of C+ (or IB English HL/SL at 3, or AP English Language/Literature at 2), or by one of IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88 with no sub-score below 20, PTE Academic 61, CAEL 70 with no sub-score below 60, or Duolingo English Test 110, each taken within two years of the admission term. Once admitted, the certificate itself requires 30 credits of undergraduate-level study, including 6 credits of ENGL at the 1100 level or higher, but that is the credential's curricular requirement rather than a condition of admission.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: KPU classifies most programs as Open Intake, meaning every applicant who meets minimum institutional requirements is admitted without ranking, while a smaller set of Limited Intake programs closes earlier. For the Fall 2027 (September) term, both domestic and international applications open on 1 October 2026; Limited Intake programs have a firm deadline of 1 March 2027 and may close earlier if demand is high, while Open Intake programs stay open on a rolling basis through a confirmation-deposit deadline of 15 June 2027 to a final cutoff of 1 July 2027. Spring (January) and Summer (May) entry follow the same open/limited pattern on an earlier timeline, and KPU applies identical deadlines to domestic and international applicants throughout. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
