Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Citation in Masonry is a 21-week, 16-credit vocational program in the Faculty of Trades and Technology that prepares students for employment as a mason (bricklayer) apprentice. Coursework covers masonry history and communication, trade first aid and safety, materials used in the trade, mortar and grout work, hand and power tool use, and blueprint reading, estimating, and layout, combined with practical outdoor projects building simple and ornate walls in brick, concrete block, glass block, terra cotta, and stone. At the end of the program, students write the Masonry Level 1 exam; those who complete the program and pass the exam are eligible for credit toward the Masonry Level 1 apprenticeship and 400 work-based training hours. Students must achieve a minimum grade of 70 percent (B-) in practical exams and assignments. To progress as an apprentice, graduates need a sponsoring employer and registration with SkilledTradesBC. Graduates find employment with construction companies and bricklaying contractors, with progression to supervisory roles possible through further training and experience.
