Overview
This certificate program prepares students to enter the cabinetmaking and joinery trade with foundational technical skills. The curriculum covers reading technical drawings and blueprints, shop equipment operation and safety, material layout techniques, cabinet assembly, finishing application, and hardware installation, along with computer-aided design (CAD) drafting and CNC equipment programming. Instruction combines classroom learning with hands-on training in a shop equipped with both traditional woodworking tools and CNC routers. The program runs over 25 weeks, from September through mid-March, at UFV's Trades and Technology Centre in Chilliwack. Graduates can apply for Skilled Trades BC apprenticeship credit toward Level 1 of the Cabinetmaker trade, along with Red Seal hours. Career paths include cabinet and furniture manufacturing, interior design and installation, restoration, renovation, sales, and shipbuilding.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or qualify as a mature student (19 years of age or older). The mathematics requirement is met by completion of Mathematics 10 or a higher grade with a grade of C or better, or by passing UFV's trades math entrance exam. The English language requirement is met by completion of English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 with a grade of C or better, an acceptable UFV Accuplacer score (Reading 80 or higher, WritePlacer 5 or higher), a UFV CPT score of 41 or higher, a TOEFL iBT score of 80 with no section below 19, or an equivalent qualification.
