Overview
This 30-week program teaches students with previous horse experience the knowledge, skills and behaviours to work competently as qualified farriers. Graduates of the program will gain the theoretical knowledge required to understand how farriery can maintain and improve the well-being of horses and meet the needs of the horse industry. They will acquire the skills to carry out farriery in a safe, humane and empathic manner, meeting the needs of horses and horse owners in a variety of equine disciplines. Graduates will learn how to interact with clients and other professions in the industry. A practicum will facilitate skill development by exposing students to farriery in the field, and an ePortfolio will provide students with the opportunity to document, track and reflect on their classroom, shop, and field experiences and build their professional network.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This programme sets its own entry standard rather than using KPU's undergraduate English requirement. You need BC English Studies 12 at C or an equivalent, or a score of at least 80 per cent on KPU's Vocational Trades English Reading Assessment. You must also submit two references confirming your experience handling a range of horses — basic care, leading, catching and releasing. Four seats in each intake are reserved for self-declared Indigenous students, with identity verification arranged through Indigenous Student Services; any of those seats left unused are offered to the general pool of qualified applicants. Class size is capped at twelve. KPU's calendar page sets out these requirements without separating domestic from international applicants, so the same standard applies to both.

Application Deadline:KPU classifies most programs as Open Intake, meaning every applicant who meets minimum institutional requirements is admitted without ranking, while a smaller set of Limited Intake programs closes earlier. For the Fall 2027 (September) term, both domestic and international applications open on 1 October 2026; Limited Intake programs have a firm deadline of 1 March 2027 and may close earlier if demand is high, while Open Intake programs stay open on a rolling basis through a confirmation-deposit deadline of 15 June 2027 to a final cutoff of 1 July 2027. Spring (January) and Summer (May) entry follow the same open/limited pattern on an earlier timeline, and KPU applies identical deadlines to domestic and international applicants throughout. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
