This diploma builds the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to support people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in leading inclusive, meaningful lives, with an emphasis on person-centred care, dignity, independence and community participation. Coursework centres on empowerment, self-determination, human rights and social justice, and takes in topics such as behaviour support strategies, community integration, health and wellness practice, evidence-informed ways of working with people across different life stages, and how to communicate effectively within this work, with equity, diversity and inclusion threaded through courses and placements. Learning combines classroom instruction and simulation with two field placements across residential, educational, vocational and community-based settings, working alongside families, caregivers and interdisciplinary teams. Graduates can go on to roles such as community living facilitator, educational assistant or support staff in group homes, schools, day programs and community organisations, or pursue further study in fields such as social work, disability studies or psychology.

Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including Grade 12 English (C or U). Mature applicants may complete an English assessment instead of the course requirement.
