The PhD in French at McMaster University focuses on Francophonie et diversite, examining French-language literatures and cultures through geographical, cultural, gender, sexual, racial, and generational lenses. Research areas span Francophone literatures from Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean; Quebec and Franco-Ontarian literature; Indigenous French literature; French literature; feminist studies; Enlightenment philosophy; queer theory; intermediality; and utopia and science fiction. Students undertake original doctoral research under faculty supervision within the Department of French, culminating in a dissertation examined through McMaster's School of Graduate Studies. The programme is completed on a full-time basis over a nominal four years, with typical entry in September, drawing on faculty expertise across the department's literary and cultural research areas. Prospective applicants are directed to the Graduate Calendar for further programme-specific requirements.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the PhD program requires a completed M.A. in French literature or linguistics, or in a program deemed equivalent by the Department in consultation with the School of Graduate Studies. Applicants must have obtained a minimum B+ average, or equivalent, at the Master's level. Required documents are official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, two letters of recommendation, and a detailed statement of interest describing the applicant's proposed research. Because instruction and evaluation in the program are conducted in French, applicants to the French graduate program are exempted from the School of Graduate Studies' general TOEFL and IELTS requirement. Part-time doctoral study is not normally available, though it may be granted in exceptional circumstances with a rigorously scheduled completion plan. Admission is competitive: meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place, and the Department of French makes the final recommendation to the Faculty of Humanities.
