Bachelor of Applied Health Science – Paramedic

This applied bachelor's degree at Medicine Hat College prepares students for practice as paramedics, with a diploma exit option available after the third year. The curriculum, aligned with the Paramedic Association of Canada's National Occupational Competency Profile and the Pan-Canadian Essential Regulatory Requirements, covers foundations of paramedic practice, pharmacology, trauma management, pathophysiology, patient assessment, mental health for first responders, and advanced critical care, progressing students through Primary Care Paramedic and Advanced Care Paramedic scopes of practice. The program runs three years for the diploma exit or four years for the full degree; the first three years are delivered face-to-face on the Medicine Hat campus, while the fourth year is delivered by distance learning. A practicum takes place in the spring/summer following the first year. Admission is by fall intake only. The program suits mature, highly motivated students able to manage the physical and emotional demands of emergency and critical care work, including shift work, and is also open to practising Advanced Care Paramedics seeking to complete the degree.
