Overview
Folklore at Memorial University is a four-year honours-eligible Bachelor of Arts program delivered on the St. John's campus through the Department of Folklore. The program studies the oral and written traditions, beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people, extending to contemporary phenomena such as urban legends, hockey culture, and tourism, with ethnographic field research treated as fundamental to the discipline. First-year study includes introductory folklore courses alongside critical reading and writing, language study, quantitative reasoning, and breadth electives, and advanced options include courses on music and song tradition, supernatural folklore, urban legend and media, and foodways. Admission Requirements: This Folklore programme sets no admission requirements of its own; applicants apply to Memorial's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences by selecting Bachelor of Arts on the undergraduate application, then may declare Folklore as a major at the time of application or in a later semester. Direct entry follows Memorial's general admission requirements: domestic applicants need a Canadian high school curriculum with an overall average of at least 70% across the required senior-level (Grade 12) subjects, while international applicants are assessed against Memorial's curriculum- and country-specific tables. Applicants whose first language is not English must present IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0 in Reading/Writing), TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with at least 4.0 in Reading and Writing, CAEL 60, PTE Academic 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176, Duolingo English Test 115, or Michigan English Test 59. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, with priority deadlines of March 1 for Fall (September), October 1 for Winter (January) and February 1 for Spring (May) entry.

Application Deadline:Memorial University's undergraduate application system opens one year ahead of each semester for the 2027 cycle: for Fall 2027 entry the portal opens 10 September 2026, the priority deadline (also the early-entrance-scholarship deadline) is 1 March 2027, the document deadline is 20 August 2027, and applications finally close 9 September 2027; Winter 2027 entry has a priority deadline of 1 October 2026 and closes 6 January 2027; Spring 2027 entry closes 11 May 2027 with a priority date of 1 February 2027. International applicants use the same direct application to Memorial and are only advised to apply at least 12 weeks before their intended semester starts; no fixed international closing date is published. Late domestic applications are still considered as time, resources and space permit, so admission is effectively rolling past the priority date up to the final close. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
