Master of Arts (Folklore)

The Master of Arts in Folklore at Memorial University is delivered on the St. John's campus and offers two paths: a combination of courses and a thesis, or a combination of courses and a co-operative education work term, with full-time students normally completing the degree in about two years. Ethnographic field research is central to the program, and students draw on resources including the Folklore and Language Archive and the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media, and Place. Memorial describes itself as the only Anglophone university in Canada offering comprehensive folklore programs at every level, with a department that has built an international reputation over more than fifty years. The program suits students with an undergraduate background in the humanities or social sciences who are interested in oral tradition, expressive culture, and community-based fieldwork, and who are considering academic careers or work in museums, archives, print and broadcast media, public-sector folklore, or arts administration.
