At the core, Recreation Therapists use leisure as a tool to help people of all ability levels make the most of their lives – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. What is Recreation Therapy? Recreation Therapy is person-centred: Our approach is about the individual, their needs and their passions, find out what lights their fire, and help them attain it.Recreation Therapy breaks barriers: It’s about inclusion and empowering individuals to live their fullest life despite any limitations.Recreation Therapy is evidence-based: Leisure is always purposeful and rooted in research, which matches specific interventions to specific client groups.It is a healthcare field that enriches lives. Recreation Therapists work in a variety of clinical & community settings and work with people across the lifespan. Our commitment to experiential learning is supported by faculty who understand its value.Students gain 480 hours of practical experience in the field through multiple practicum experiences with over 400 agencies in our database.Compressed schedule allows for students to balance work and school with classes offered on select days.We offer two unique outdoor RT course experiences (overnight at camp) which has been shown to engage students, increase sense of belonging among peers and faculty, and contribute towards student success. Students say it is one of the most memorable parts of the program!We offer over 6 certifications and workshop trainings to set students apart on their job applications. Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent (Mohawk Academic Upgrading or GED accepted), including Grade 12 English at the C, U or equivalent level, guided by a 70% mark as a rough benchmark. Mohawk will consider advanced standing and credit for prior learning with related experience on an individual basis, recommends volunteer experience in recreation therapy, and strongly recommends attendance at program orientation; mature applicants have alternative options. Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency through one of: successful completion of the GAS-English for Academic Purposes (478) program, a TOEFL score of 560 paper-based or 83 internet-based, an IELTS Academic overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or a Duolingo English Test score of 115-120 with no section below 105. Some employment opportunities in this field require meeting certain physical standards as a condition of employment.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through Ontario Colleges: for a September start Mohawk's equal-consideration date is 1 February (1 February 2027 for the next fall intake), and for a January start it is 1 June; after either date, files are considered first-come, first-served while seats remain, with permanent residents of Ontario prioritized, then other Canadian residents, then international applicants. International applicants apply via OCAS's International Application Service on a per-intake deadline rather than one annual date: for January 2027 entry, applications opened February 2026 and the submission deadline is 1 November 2026; Mohawk had not yet published a deadline for the September 2027 intake as of this check. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
