Overview
Make a difference to those who live with disabilities Embark on a rewarding career and make a difference in the lives of children and adults who live with physical, developmental, and intellectual disabilities or dual diagnoses by learning how to support their emotional, mental, physical, and social needs. You’ll gain a solid foundation of the stages of human development and the community supports available to those living with a disability. You’ll learn alternate modes of communication, including sign language and a picture exchange communication system. Using a person-centred approach and positive reinforcement to build relationships, you’ll help individuals with disabilities and their families live safe, respectful lives of quality and inclusion.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Cambrian's page for Developmental Services Worker requires a 30-credit Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, or mature student status, plus grade 12 English at the College (C) or University (U) level; grade 11 mathematics and grade 11 or 12 biology are recommended but not required, alongside computer competency in relevant software. Before starting a work placement by the end of the first semester, students must also provide current immunizations (including at least one COVID-19 vaccine), Standard First Aid with Level C CPR, a negative Vulnerable Sector Screen, a two-step TB test, and, for international students, a co-op work permit — all at the student's own cost. The page defers international applicants to Cambrian's international admissions page; there, the institution-wide English Language Proficiency Requirement sets the Diploma/Certificate tier at IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE Academic 58, or Duolingo English Test 105-115.
