Program details

Overview

Hispanic Studies at Mount Allison University introduces students to the Spanish language and to the cultures of the Hispanic world, with no prior knowledge of Spanish required to begin. The credential is a Bachelor of Arts major, with a minor also available in any other program. Courses are taught in Spanish except where noted, progressing from introductory grammar, pronunciation, and reading through intermediate and advanced language proficiency built on conversation and language laboratory practice, and on to upper-level courses on Spanish theatre, novels, poetry, and literary analysis; specific courses also cover Latin American cultures, Indigenous studies, and gender representation in Hispanic literature and visual culture. Delivery is on-campus at the Sackville, New Brunswick campus, supported by a dedicated language lab, with opportunities for study abroad through exchanges with Spanish universities or teaching assistant placements. The program suits students interested in international work, language learning, and Hispanic cultures, and it prepares graduates for careers such as translator or interpreter, teacher, international NGO worker, foreign service officer, or roles in tourism development and cultural relations.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Hispanic Studies's programme page sets no academic prerequisites of its own for a Bachelor of Arts and defers to Mount Allison's general admission requirements. There, decisions weigh the whole applicant — academic record, leadership, level of commitment, and potential for personal growth — with the specific courses and grades required varying by the applicant's province or country and prior education. Applicants whose language of instruction was not English must meet Mount Allison's English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 in each of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing (PTE Academic 60 with no score below 51, CAEL CE 70 with no part below 60, Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 with no band below 169, and Duolingo English Test 110 are also accepted). Three years of Canadian secondary schooling, or 30+ credit hours at an English-medium post-secondary institution, can also satisfy it; applicants short only on language may receive conditional admission through the university's English Summer Pathway Program.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Mount Allison uses rolling admission with no fixed general deadline: for the 2027-28 (Fall 2027) intake, early admission based on final Grade 11 marks opens 1 October 2026, general admission with mid-year Grade 12 transcripts opens in February 2027, and 1 March 2027 is the deadline to submit all application documents for admission and scholarship consideration. The deadline to accept an offer and pay the registration deposit is 1 May 2027. Bachelor of Music applicants must submit their application package by 1 February 2027, and Fine Arts (BFA/BA) applicants must submit their portfolio by 15 February 2027. International applicants follow the same published dates; Mount Allison does not publish a separate international deadline, so admission remains rolling until programs are full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
