Overview

English is offered as a Bachelor of Arts field of study at Mount Saint Vincent University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, developing critical reading, writing, analysis, and research skills through the study of English language and literature and its connections to other fields. Students can pursue an Honours degree or certificate, a Major, Combined Major, Concentration, or Minor in English Literature, or a separate Writing Minor focused on the theory and practice of writing, editing, and publishing across genres, and coursework connects readily to Cultural Studies and Women's Studies. Honours students complete a full-year, independent research thesis under faculty supervision, described as a distinctive opportunity among Halifax universities. The department offers a BA Internship option allowing students to apply their studies in corporate, government, or non-profit workplace settings, and more broadly provides experiential learning through co-op work terms, internships, practicums, volunteering, research projects, and service learning. Classes are kept small, from writing workshops of up to 25 students to literature classes of 20 to 30, supporting close feedback from instructors. An active, student-led English Society runs theatre trips, readings, and the annual Atlantic Undergraduate English Conference. The program suits students seeking strong writing and critical-thinking skills for varied careers or further study.
