The Graduate Certificate in Nutrition and Aging provides students with specialized knowledge of the interrelationship between nutrition and aging, essential to understanding how food and nutrition affect the physiological, psychological, and socio-economic dimensions of an older person's life. The program examines aging-related nutrition education across multiple levels, from the individual within family and community settings, through age-friendly and food-secure communities and care homes, to nutrition policy, health systems, and the broader values, culture, and religious beliefs that shape nutrition and aging. Students gain professional knowledge of disease prevention, health promotion, and appropriate recommendations for older adults with chronic health needs. The certificate is offered jointly by the Department of Applied Human Nutrition and the Department of Aging and Family Science and requires 2.0 units of coursework, made up of required courses and an elective.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Applicants must provide evidence of an undergraduate degree in a field that provides the required background for the certificate, with a GPA of 3.0 (B) or better. A current immunization record and a recent, valid criminal record check with a vulnerable sector search are required, since the program includes a placement-based Nutrition and Aging course in health and community settings. Conditional acceptance may be available where a required graduate course has an undergraduate prerequisite: successful completion of that undergraduate course may be set as a condition of admission to the certificate.
