Overview
This program will prepare graduates for employment as a Human Service Worker, with a focus on serving Indigenous people on or off a reserve. Students will acquire culturally appropriate knowledge, skills, and values while working with individuals, groups, and communities. Indigenous Human Service Worker (IHSW) Certificate graduates will earn course credits that can be applied to NLC’s Early Childhood Education and Care Diploma, Education Assistant Diploma, and Social Service Worker Diploma. Conversely, graduates from these diploma programs may apply relevant course credits to completion of the IHSW Certificate.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants meet NLC's English requirement with a 'C' grade or higher in English 12, English Literature 12, or English First Peoples 12, ENGL 050, or ENGL 099, or an equivalent university-level English course; those who fall short may instead complete the NLC Writing Assessment for course placement. Dual-credit high-school applicants may qualify with successful completion of English 11 plus enrolment in an acceptable Grade 12 English course carrying a minimum interim grade of 'C'. International applicants and those educated in French or another language must instead meet the standards set out in the college's Appendix A (General Academic English Language Proficiency Requirements); the calendar page does not itself publish test scores. Before registration, admitted students must supply a Schedule B Criminal Record Check clearance letter from the Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General covering work with children and vulnerable adults, renewed if it lapses before completion; no practicum placement is permitted without a CRC on file. The certificate is offered full-time online with a Fall intake.

Application Deadline:Northern Lights College uses one admissions calendar for domestic and international applicants alike, applying through EducationPlannerBC or in person. Applications open about eleven months before each intake: 1 October for the following Fall, 1 February for the following Winter, and 1 June for the following Spring. For the 2027 cycle the priority deadline is 30 September 2026 for Winter 2027 entry, 31 January 2027 for Spring 2027 entry, and 31 May 2027 for Fall 2027 entry (dual-credit applicants get until 24 October 2026 and 23 June 2027 respectively), with a tuition deposit due about a month after each priority date. NLC states international applicants already in Canada on a valid visa follow the same domestic deadlines; after the priority date, seats remain open, on a rolling basis, until each term's add/drop date. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
