Overview
This program explores the histories, cultures, languages, governance structures, knowledge systems, and contemporary realities of Indigenous peoples within lands claimed by the colonial-settler state of Canada, and teaches basic research skills in this context. The certificate, which can be completed as a full-time or part-time program or as part of a bachelor's degree, is especially suited to students who wish to gain proficiency in Indigenous content, issues impacting Indigenous communities, and basic cultural resource management skills. Students should plan their admission and program in consultation with the Indigenous Studies Advisor.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: General Simon Fraser University admission requirements apply, and the certificate adds its own declaration bar: students must complete a minimum of three INDG courses at SFU with an average subject grade of C or better before declaring, with INDG 101 and INDG 201W recommended beforehand. A minimum 2.0 grade point average calculated on all courses applied to the certificate is required. Canadian high-school applicants reach general admission with at least five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or equivalent at 70% or better in Language Arts 11/English 12; international secondary-school applicants are assessed on a first-semester senior-year transcript. No IELTS, TOEFL, portfolio or interview requirement is published for this certificate; students are directed to plan it with the Indigenous Studies Advisor.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
