Overview
This certificate deepens knowledge of Indigenous peoples' cultures, histories, and contemporary realities, preparing graduates to work in Indigenous communities or with Indigenous peoples in other settings. The 30-credit program is nominally one year of full-time study, though it can also be completed part-time, and up to 15 credits of prior learning may be recognized toward it. Three required courses, covering Indigenous peoples of Canada, contemporary Indigenous issues, and Indigenous policy in Canada, are paired with 21 elective credits chosen mainly from anthropology and related fields addressing Indigenous societies, cosmologies, and rights. Course delivery combines on-campus instruction with some courses offered at a distance, allowing part or all of the program to be completed remotely. Admission is offered in the Fall, Winter, and Summer terms. The certificate can stand alone or contribute credits toward a related bachelor's degree, and is intended for students seeking grounding in Indigenous studies for professional or academic purposes.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Quebec applicants need any DEC (Diplome d'etudes collegiales). Applicants with Canadian secondary schooling from outside Quebec need a high-school diploma plus one year of university study. International applicants need a 13-year pre-university diploma, or a 12-year diploma plus one year of post-secondary study. Applicants whose schooling was not in French must demonstrate French proficiency, normally with a Test de connaissance du francais (TCF tout public) score of at least 361/699 on the required sections and at least 8/20 on the written-expression component.
