Overview
Marine Navigation Technology at Nova Scotia Community College is a three-year diploma program that prepares students for a career as a ship's navigation officer in the commercial marine industry. Coursework covers watchkeeping practices, seamanship, safety, communications, ship construction and stability, and meteorology, delivered on campus at the Nautical Institute. Graduates gain the academic and applied skills for entry-level deck officer roles trained to International Maritime Organization standards. The program includes a mandatory sea time component of 360 days, completed on Canadian and international merchant ships between May and August during and following the academic years. Graduates find employment with shipping companies operating cargo ships, tankers, passenger ferries, and research and offshore supply vessels. Admission requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Transport Canada Marine Medical certificate, and a criminal record check for work placements.
