Overview

Social Services is a two-year diploma program at Nova Scotia Community College that prepares students for entry-level roles in the social services field. The curriculum covers the structure and function of the social services system in Nova Scotia, along with support strategies for working with diverse and vulnerable populations across the lifespan. Students examine their own values and attitudes as they relate to helping relationships and develop interviewing, case management and group facilitation skills through classroom instruction and practical exercises. The program includes mandatory field placement experience, giving students hands-on exposure to social service agencies before graduation. Graduates are prepared for front-line positions such as social service worker, community support worker or case aide in government, non-profit and community-based organizations. Admission requires a current criminal record check, vulnerable sector check, First Aid/CPR certification prior to graduation, and up-to-date immunizations, reflecting the client-facing nature of the work. The program begins in September.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent. Applicants must also provide a current criminal record check and vulnerable sector check, complete First Aid/CPR certification prior to graduation, and meet immunization requirements, which can take up to 10 months to fulfil.
