American Sign Language/English Interpretation at Nova Scotia Community College is a two-year diploma program, the only one of its kind in the Maritimes, that prepares students to interpret between Deaf and hearing communities. Many faculty are Deaf, giving students direct exposure to Deaf culture alongside instruction in ASL foundations and professional interpreting skills. Coursework covers the foundations of ASL and Deaf culture, applying interpreting skills in professional settings, and the social and interpersonal skills needed to maintain professionalism in high-stakes, sensitive situations. The program is eligible for an optional cooperative education placement of at least 12 weeks and 420 hours between the first and second year, providing paid, full-time work experience in the field. The program begins each September; graduates are not eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, and the program prepares students for careers as ASL/English interpreters serving Deaf and hearing communities.
