This program delivers the in-class technical-training levels of the Welder apprenticeship for tradespeople sponsored by an employer and registered with SkilledTradesBC. Training runs across three levels — eight weeks each for Levels 1 and 2, and ten weeks for Level 3 — delivered full-time on campus at the Kelowna Trades Complex, with day or afternoon/evening scheduling options. Apprentices become eligible to write the Red Seal examination on the final day of the Level 3 program, leading to inter-provincial certification in welding. Level 1 covers oxy-fuel cutting, shielded metal arc welding, and semi-automatic welding; Level 2 builds on shielded metal arc and semi-automatic welding while adding metallurgy and welding drawings; Level 3 introduces gas tungsten arc welding, quality control, and other specialized processes. The program requires an existing employer sponsor with at least one qualified journeyperson and is intended for apprentices progressing through their sponsored welding apprenticeship, rather than people without trade employment; those without SkilledTradesBC registration are directed to the Welder Modular Training pathway instead.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Welder: Apprenticeship is an apprenticeship-level program at Okanagan College: admission requires the applicant to already be registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC and employed by an employer with at least one qualified journeyperson in the trade. The program page notes that an applicant who is not yet registered can have their employer register them through SkilledTradesBC's online portal, described as free, simple and completable within a few minutes. No secondary-school course, grade minimum, or English-language proficiency test is stated as a requirement at this apprenticeship level; entry is administered through the SkilledTradesBC apprenticeship system and employer sponsorship rather than through the College's own academic admission requirements. Applicants who are not yet registered as an apprentice are directed instead to the College's separate Welder Modular Training route. Applicants should confirm current registration status directly with SkilledTradesBC before applying to the program intake.
