Program details

Overview

This two-year interdisciplinary degree frames disasters as outcomes of interacting environmental, social, economic, and political forces, training students to plan for, mitigate, and recover from them while strengthening at-risk communities' resilience. It is offered through a blend of mostly online courses and short, intensive on-campus residencies, or entirely online. Students can build toward the degree from the one-year Graduate Diploma in Disaster and Emergency Management, taking one nine-week online course at a time with a two-week break between courses, at roughly 20 hours of work per week; the blended option includes two two-week residencies on Royal Roads' ocean-front campus. First-year coursework is shared with the Graduate Diploma, and in the second year students choose either a thesis option, adding a research course during the second residency, or a coursework option that can include a six-credit internship for hands-on field experience.
