The Certificate in Linguistics examines the structure and function of language and how systematic linguistic patterns underlie human communication. It complements degree studies in language teaching, anthropology, sociology, business, and computer science. The certificate requires 30 credit hours, including LING 1200 (Introduction to Linguistics), six credits chosen from four core linguistics courses covering phonetics, sound patterns, syntax, or semantics, three credits at the 3000 level or above, and 15 additional credits from an approved list; with coordinator permission, one course may be taken outside linguistics. At least 15 of the 30 credit hours must be completed at Saint Mary's University. Admission requires a formal application and approval from the Linguistics Coordinator, and students already majoring in Linguistics at Saint Mary's are not eligible to enrol. A minimum GPA of 2.00 on a 4.3 scale is required to graduate from the certificate program.
