Overview

Sustainable Development is a certificate and minor administered by the Centre for Sustainable Development within Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Environment. The program examines the relationship between development and environment through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, covering topics such as housing, community building, co-operative economies, and globalization. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on the natural and social sciences, and includes content on Indigenous and First Nations perspectives on sustainable development in Canada and globally. The certificate requires six courses totalling 20-21 units, beginning with an introductory course on sustainable futures and a course introducing the Sustainable Development Goals framework. Students wishing to enrol normally must already be admitted to a degree program at SFU and be in good academic standing; they contact the Resource and Environmental Management academic advisor for approval to add the certificate alongside their primary degree.
