Program details

Overview

The PhD in Engineering Science requires 18 units of coursework, a qualifying examination and a defended research thesis, with applicants expected to secure a faculty supervisor before admission. The research-intensive program is designed to be completed in 12 terms (approximately four years).

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program page requires a master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, computer science or a related field, submitted evidence that the applicant is capable of undertaking substantial original research in engineering science, and a faculty member willing to act as supervisor before admission; expected completion is 12 terms, about four years. It does not restate a numeric GPA for applicants who already hold the required master's, pointing instead to the University's general graduate admission requirements for any figures beyond the master's-degree condition itself. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet SFU's general standard, typically an IELTS Academic overall band of 6.5 (minimum 6.0 per section) or a TOEFL iBT overall score of 90 (minimum 20 per section), unless exempted by prior education taught and examined in English in a country where English is the primary language.
