Overview
History at St. Francis Xavier University is a Bachelor of Arts delivered in person through the Faculty of Arts on the Antigonish, Nova Scotia campus. First-year students choose between introductory courses in Western Civilization, covering developments from ancient Greece through the twentieth century, or Global History, focused on world cultures and cross-cultural relations, before progressing to advanced national and thematic studies. Upper-year courses examine themes such as war, empire, myth and memory, religion, gender, sexuality, and race, and are taught in small classes that allow close engagement with course material. The program is oriented toward developing analytic thinking alongside communication and research skills, and toward preparing students to be engaged and informed citizens. It suits students with an interest in examining the past through varied thematic lenses and in developing transferable research and writing abilities. Graduates pursue careers and further study in fields such as law, journalism, publishing, teaching, heritage conservation, museums and archives, management and policy, business, public service, consulting, and library and information administration.

Admission Requirements: The History page states no program-specific admission requirements and defers to StFX's general admission requirements; History is a major declared at the end of first year of the Bachelor of Arts. The university-wide minimum is an overall Grade 12 average of 70%, with no grade below 65% in each required subject. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an approved test: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no section below 20), Duolingo 115 (no subscore below 100), CAEL 70 (no band below 60), PTE Academic 60 (no score below 50), or MET 55, valid within two years of application.
