Overview

The Accelerated Nursing Program at St. Francis Xavier University leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, delivered in person and on campus through the Elizabeth and Thomas Rankin School of Nursing. It is designed for students who already hold prior post-secondary credits and allows them to complete the degree over six continuous semesters, totalling 24 months, rather than the four years typically required for the standard BScN. The condensed schedule runs without the usual breaks between terms, covering the same core content as the regular program at a faster pace. In the first year, students complete three continuous semesters covering areas such as health and health systems, evidence-informed practice, and research fundamentals, placing them roughly halfway through the program by year's end. The curriculum aims to prepare competent, safe, evidence-informed, and critical-thinking nurses. Upon graduation, students apply to the Nova Scotia College of Nurses to write the licensure exam required to become a Registered Nurse. The program suits students who want to enter the nursing workforce sooner than a traditional four-year timeline allows. Graduates can pursue further study and specialty certification in areas such as perinatal, neonatal, and pediatric care, cardiology, oncology, palliative care, and mental health and addictions, working in settings from hospitals and community health to research and policy roles.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: StFX's Accelerated BScN option is described on its own program page and cross-referenced against the Admission Requirements for Nursing Programs page. Applicants need a minimum of 30 university credits, including six credits of Human Anatomy and Physiology with a lab component, three credits of Microbiology, three credits of Statistics, and three credits of English or an approved academic-writing course, plus fifteen credits of open electives, all completed at the university level within ten years of the program start date. Each required core and open course must carry a grade of at least 65%, with an overall average of 70% or higher across all courses; admission is competitive and meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a seat, with priority given to residents of Nova Scotia. StFX's general English Language Requirements page states that applicants whose first language is not English must submit a recognized proficiency test score; the university's institution-wide undergraduate minimums are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 90 (no section below 20). International applications are not currently being accepted for this option.
