Overview
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry is about the science of the materials that make up our physical world, and comprises a range of study, including areas such as pharmaceuticals, advanced materials, biochemistry, and theoretical chemistry. You’ll study matter and the changes that matter undergoes via physical and chemical processes, with the option to tailor your focus to a number of different sub-disciplines. Areas of focus include biological, computational, environmental, theoretical, or materials chemistry. The program can lead to careers in research, medicine, dentistry, law, education, government, pharmacy, industry, or even food science.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UBC's own admission page for Chemistry defers to the Faculty of Science's general prerequisites rather than listing separate courses. For BC applicants, UBC's institution-wide Science standard adds Pre-Calculus 12 to English Studies 12 (or English First Peoples 12) among the required Grade 12 courses, with no institution-wide minimum entry average since each program competes within its own applicant pool. The program's own page adds: IB Math: Analysis and Approaches SL/HL, or Applications and Interpretation HL (its SL variant and Math Studies do not qualify); one of IB Biology, Chemistry, or Physics; and Grade 11 (or equivalent) Chemistry and Physics, the Physics requirement waivable with grades of 5 in IB Chemistry and IB Mathematics. International applicants without an IB Diploma otherwise follow UBC's published credential list: GCE A Levels, the Baccalaureat, the Singapore-Cambridge GCE, a Chinese senior-secondary diploma with Gaokao, or an equivalent twelve-year-system credential. All applicants must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90, PTE Academic 65, or Duolingo English Test 125.
Application Details
Start Date:September 2027 - entry is to UBC's Winter Session, which runs September 2027 to April 2028 (Term 1 September to December, Term 2 January to April). UBC also runs a Summer Session from May to August, but not every degree admits to it.
Application Deadline:Apply by 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, for September 2027 entry (Winter Session 2027/28) - this is UBC's university-wide undergraduate deadline and it is the same date for Canadian and international applicants, not a date set by this program. The online application opens in early October 2026 through EducationPlannerBC. Earlier dates apply only to major entrance awards: 15 November 2026 for international applicants (UBC International Scholars Program) and 1 December 2026 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents (Presidential Scholars, UBC Centennial Scholars Entrance and Beyond Tomorrow Scholars). UBC advises applying by the deadline because some programs stop accepting applications on that date; later applications may be considered but are not given the same priority. Document deadlines (transcripts, English-language evidence) are issued to each applicant in the Applicant Service Centre after applying.
