Overview
The MSc in Chemistry at UBC's Okanagan campus is a two-year research degree built on a twenty-three-credit thesis plus seven credits of coursework, including a chemistry seminar course, with a minimum cumulative average required to remain in good standing. Students join one of the department's research groups in Kelowna and work through a supervised project from proposal to written thesis and defence. Research areas across the department run to roughly nineteen specialisations, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, chemical biology, environmental chemistry, glycoscience, nanoscience, organic and physical chemistry, and theoretical and computational work. Most students serve as teaching assistants for at least one term, gaining laboratory and tutorial teaching experience. The degree is a common stepping stone to doctoral study and to analytical and research roles in industry and government laboratories.

Admission Requirements: Applicants need the academic equivalent of a four-year UBC BSc in chemistry or a related field, with a minimum average of B+ (76%) in third- or fourth-year coursework, or at least 12 third- or fourth-year credits in the intended field of study at A- (80%) or better, or significant formal training and relevant professional experience. The program page defers English-language testing to UBC Okanagan's general graduate requirements: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 90 (reading and listening 22, writing and speaking 21) or the post-January-2026 scale score of 4.5, PTE Academic overall 65 with no section below 60, or Duolingo English Test overall 125 with no section below 115.
