Overview
UBC Extended Learning's Certificate in Spanish, Practical and Business is aimed at working professionals who want to communicate comfortably in Spanish and understand the cultures and customs of Spain and Latin America for work and travel. The program runs part-time over a maximum of 18 months and consists of at least five nine-week courses followed by a final project: either four conversation courses plus one reading-and-writing or Latin American culture course, or three conversation courses plus two of those. By the end, learners are expected to discuss familiar topics in depth, handle grammar, verb tenses and formal protocols correctly, recognise the difference between colloquial and formal registers, read contemporary Spanish texts and write clearly on a range of subjects. The final project takes nine weeks and is presented to a committee. Study is fully online or a mix of online and in-person classes; applicants need a basic command of Spanish, as conversation courses begin at lower-intermediate level.

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a basic command of spoken and written Spanish before applying to this UBC Extended Learning certificate; the program's conversation, reading and writing courses begin at a lower-intermediate level, and applicants unsure of their level are advised to review the program's language-level guide or contact the department before enrolling. UBC states no minimum secondary or post-secondary credential and sets no English-language test requirement for this continuing-education certificate. Admission is on a rolling basis: applicants may apply at any time by completing an online application describing their personal and career goals, then paying a non-refundable CAD $175 application fee; once accepted, they register directly for the required minimum of five nine-week courses plus a final project, to be completed within 18 months.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
