Overview
A coursework-and-thesis master's giving students the opportunity for advanced study and original investigation in basic and applied human nutrition. Thesis research is carried out through laboratory or field work under faculty supervision, in areas including nutrient metabolism, diet and disease, nutrition through the life cycle and nutrition behaviours. The programme works in collaboration with colleagues in other UBC departments and programmes, among them Animal Science, Food Science, Pediatrics, the School of Population and Public Health, the School of Kinesiology and Pharmaceutical Sciences, which widens the range of projects a student can take on. Admission depends on a firm commitment from a supervisor secured before applying, and recent graduates have completed in a little over two years.

Admission Requirements: Admission requires an undergraduate degree in a science area together with a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC), the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' baseline. The program also requires specific prerequisite coursework: a minimum of three third- or fourth-year credits in biochemistry, three third- or fourth-year credits in human or vertebrate physiology, and 12 third- or fourth-year credits in nutrition. As with other thesis-based Nutrition programs, applicants need a firm supervisor commitment before applying. Applicants from universities outside Canada where English was not the language of instruction must meet, within 24 months of applying, TOEFL iBT 90 (or 4.5 on the current six-point scale), IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, or Duolingo English Test 125 overall. The application further requires official transcripts from every post-secondary institution and three letters of reference; a statement of interest is required, and the GRE is not required.

Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
