Overview
Power, Conflict, and Ideas is an Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies theme at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, drawing on researchers across the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and beyond. The MA is a 24-month program of coursework and thesis in which students examine the causes and consequences of the political dynamics shaping the world, learn to work with archives and historical data, engage with social theory and theoretical approaches, apply ethical frameworks and sharpen critical analysis. Eighteen credits of coursework are required, including the IGS 524 proseminar, IGS 592 methods training and theme seminars chosen from IGS 589, 590 and 591, before students move on to thesis research and defence under a faculty supervisory committee. Interests within the theme range across criminology, social movements, gender studies, inequality, critical race theory, religion and identity in conflict, and posthumanism. Admission requires the support of a faculty supervisor.

Admission Requirements: This Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies program's own admission page requires a minimum IELTS 7.0 overall score, or an equivalent score on another accepted English test, for non-native English speakers; it does not publish a minimum undergraduate GPA. Admission additionally requires the prior support of a faculty supervisor plus a complete application package: online application and fee, official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, a Statement of Intent, a CV or resume, and two reference forms or letters; a scholarly writing sample such as a term paper is recommended but not required.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
