Overview
The MA in French and Francophone Studies at the University of Victoria covers French and Francophone literature, language and culture, with students choosing either a project-based or a thesis option. Faculty specialisms span French, Quebec, French-Canadian, African and Caribbean literatures, culture and theory, alongside cinema, theatre, Indigenous literatures, creative writing and research-creation, queer theories, digital humanities, and theoretical and applied linguistics. Coursework includes research methods and professional practices, and students work within a close-knit cohort in the Faculty of Humanities. A concentration in Cultural, Social and Political Thought is available as an option. Expected length is one to two years of full-time on-campus study, and graduates move into fields such as teaching, translation and interpretation, publishing, communications, cultural programming, public service and libraries and archives.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the French and Francophone Studies MA must have completed a four-year Bachelor of Arts, or equivalent, including at least 15 units of senior undergraduate coursework in French; the program's own page states no minimum GPA. It is not necessary to identify a potential supervisor in the application, though applicants are welcome to explore faculty research interests beforehand. As with every UVic graduate program, applicants whose prior instruction was not in English must meet the Faculty of Graduate Studies' language-proficiency standard: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 with no section below 20 (or 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 on tests after January 2026), PTE Academic 65 with no skill below 60, CAEL 70 with no section below 60, or Cambridge C1/C2 at 180 with no skill below 170; individual departments may set a higher bar. The program admits for September entry only; the general application deadline is May 31, with an earlier February 1 deadline for consideration for a UVic Fellowship.
