Interdisciplinary Arts: Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is a master's degree in Arts, Design & Architecture programme taught at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada. The programme runs for 2 years, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition for international students is CAD 2,150 per semester (CAD 2,150 per semester for local students).
A two-year, seven-semester MFA built around interdisciplinary studio practice across dance, film, music, theatre, and visual art, admitting roughly ten students a year who must be based in the Vancouver area. The 35-unit program combines graduate seminars and discipline-focused studios with a culminating artistic project defended alongside a supporting essay, welcoming both applicants with a strong single-discipline background seeking an interdisciplinary environment and those whose studio work already spans two or more disciplines.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Interdisciplinary Arts MFA normally hold an undergraduate degree in visual culture, art history, cinema studies, performance studies, cultural studies, communications, literary studies or another arts-focused discipline; a BFA including substantial scholarly work also qualifies. A 3.0 GPA is typical rather than a fixed floor, and the program occasionally admits applicants with a lower GPA, or in rare cases without an undergraduate degree, where a substantial professional artistic practice and clear program fit are demonstrated; such admits may then be required to maintain a 3.0 CGPA in their early terms. International applicants must meet SFU's graduate English requirement unless their prior degree was taught in English in a country where English is the primary language, and the program accepts the Duolingo English Test at a minimum of 130 overall with 120 per section (provisionally approved through Fall 2026), alongside TOEFL/IELTS at SFU's general thresholds of IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (6.0 per band) or TOEFL iBT 90 overall (20 per section); scores must come directly from the testing agency. The GRE is not required. Applicants submit a CV, an artist's statement, three 150-to-200-word project scenarios, a portfolio with a specified viewing order, an academic writing sample, and three reference letters.
